At first sight, this image struck me in a powerful way. The title says, “First man takes a drink, then the drink takes the man.” It’s a powerful statement. Well, it goes deeper than just the drink, because the truth is there are spirits attached to that craving. —And until that craving is fulfilled by taking another drink, it is a vicious cycle of destruction, having a source of that devastation —it is not about the drink itself.
Many people associate addiction with a disease, such as alcoholism, and they are correct in a sense, but not in the way that the medical community explains it. It is a spiritual disease. A disease is a disorder or condition that affects the normal functioning of the body or mind and typically involves specific symptoms. —It is characterized by abnormal physiological processes, such as an infection, malfunction of organs or systems, genetic abnormalities, or other factors that disrupt normal bodily functions. Diseases can be caused by various factors, including pathogens (such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi), genetic mutations, “environmental factors,” lifestyle choices, or a combination of these factors.
Environmental factors, there we have it. A good majority of people are unaware or unwilling to admit that we live in the natural world surrounded by a supernatural realm. Our environment is filled with many things that are not seen with our eyes but felt and experienced. This includes the angelic and demonic kingdoms built upon the earth by Satan after his fall with the third of the angels.
Scripture states, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” – Ephesians 6:12
Therefore, these addictions and the behaviors and cravings are attached to a supernatural source that ultimately leads the body to be physically and mentally addicted. This is where doctors can explain in detail the chemical changes that occur in the mind and body. Addiction is made up of spirits of obsession, depression, suicide, murder, and every ungodly thing an addict invites into their body by defiling the Holy temple with substances on a regular basis, becoming physically and spiritually dependent. As a result, the barriers of the Holy Spirit are broken through our own rebellion, and all hell breaks loose in Satan’s victim. The addict’s behaviors and actions become more erratic, and the unclean spirits take over the house. An unclean spirit has an assignment: to steal the joy and image of God, ultimately kill the person, and destroy everything, not only in the possessed person’s life but also in the lives of everyone around them, including strangers and especially those who love them.
Take a look at the scripture. The enemy is Satan, and Jesus is the one referred to as “I,” who is the great I AM.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – John 10:10
Anyone who has experienced addiction which is ultimately a form of possession understands the destructive obsession that leads to physical, mental and moral decline. Think about how many times we read in the news of a person who was once a shining star, an athlete, or a singer and dancer, a sweet, innocent young person, who is tempted by the demon, and who said yes to that first drink, or that first drug, and later they will have become a tyrant and a monster, and how many times do we read about people in this state of mind spiritually, sick from the demonic disease, end up murdering innocent people, raping and killing? And not just to obtain the drug, but after having given legal possession of their bodies to these demons, ingesting more substances in the body and all reason is gone. We often hear people say, “I heard voices tell me to do it.” Those without spiritual understanding will claim that these are just excuses men used to murder, and indeed at times they are but more often than not they are not excuses But they are not to be believed because they are murderers and rapists and killers and molesters. All of these things are the works of the enemy, Ephesians 6:12, and demons continue to stay and cause more destruction.
These traits are often attached to a demon sent into a person’s life with a mission to steal, kill, and destroy. These demons are often associated with generational curses that have been passed down through a family, usually as a result of the sins of the father and mother and their ancestral history.
The scripture that references the concept of generational curses is found in Exodus 20:5-6:
“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” – Exodus 20:5-6 (NIV)
Yet, Jesus Christ breaks all these curses when we are in covenant with him, and when we are truly born-again and give our lives to him, he gives us our lives back and delivers us from these demons. Take a look at John 10:10 again where it says the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy but I am coming come to give life.
Scripture:
While the Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.” – Numbers 14:18
“The one who commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” – 1 John 3:8
This verse details the cause of the things that we are suffering with, which can include various mental illnesses and addictive behaviors, not only related to drugs but also to sex, child molestation, and more. It is critical to have faith in these words and remember that those we keep company with can often influence us and lead us to become like them. Families indeed!
Scriptures
“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.'” – 1 Corinthians 15:33
—Yet, for those truly born again there is a source of freedom, and it comes to the Spirit of God. Take a look.
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” – Galatians 5:16
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1
“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” – Colossians 1:13-14
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13
